Reign Stumble In Philly Despite Starbird Heroics

Associated Press

ABL

Dawn Staley’s 3-point jumper with 36 seconds left helped the Philadelphia Rage withstand the Seattle Reign’s late rally for an 87-82 ABL victory Saturday night.

Philadelphia (3-0) led 66-51 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter following a jumper by Staley, who scored 22 points.

Seattle (1-5) then mounted a comeback led by Kate Starbird, who topped the Reign with 21 points. She scored 10 in the fourth quarter. Her 3-pointer with 56 seconds left tied it at 80.

Starbird had converted a five-point play with 8:50 remaining. She scored on a driving layup and was fouled by Taj McWilliams, who also was hit with a technical foul. Starbird sank all three free throws to cut the Rage lead to 66-61.
