In an evenly matched soccer showdown for the girls District I title Saturday night, Sandpoint defeated the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 1-0 to earn the No. 1 seed to the state tournament.

State play begins Thursday in Boise. Sandpoint, 15-1-2, will play the third seed from District III. CdA (15-6) will enter as second seed and Moscow (14-5), which beat Lewiston 2-1 Saturday, will be third.

“This game is going to come down to defense,” CdA coach Geary Jerde said before Saturday’s match.

Jerde’s prediction came true as the Vikings only got nine shots off in the half and the Bulldogs five.

The lone goal of the match, played at Memorial Stadium, came 38 minutes into the first half when Bulldog Rebekah Reifsnyder, on a free kick due to a pushing penalty, booted the ball. It landed on the crossbar, bounced a couple of times, and came down against the back of a CdA player, rolling into the net.

“The bounce was one of those freak good-for-them, bad-for-us deals,” said Jerde. “If it hadn’t been for bad luck, we wouldn’t have had any luck at all. We played the game we wanted to play and it just didn’t work out nicely. It’s only happened a couple of times this year. We’re still second seed (at state) though, so we’ve just got to keep going. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

CdA had a chance to tie with 5 minutes left in the second half. Vik forward Janee Andre, who has 22 goals this season, broke away, dribbling down the field 20 yards. Her shot was narrowly saved by keeper Tashena Taylor with a flying catch.

Taylor finished with 10 saves. CdA keeper Kathy Cottrell had 7.

Despite no scoring in the second half, the Bulldogs came out fired up, dominating possession of the ball with seven attempts to CdA’s two.

Moscow 2, Lewiston 1

Holly Davidson scored the first goal and set up the winner at 71 minutes as the Bears edged the visiting Bengals (8-8-2).

Brenda Robinson assisted on Davidson’s goal at 36:00. Carmen Sobel of the Bengals tied the match 15 minutes later. Tara Tribbett’s header off Davidson’s 25-yard kick broke the tie.
