St. Mary’s Gets Victory Over Zag Women

Meredith Guevara had 19 kills and nine digs Saturday as Saint Mary’s rallied past visiting Gonzaga 7-15, 15-12, 6-15, 15-10, 15-10 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match at Moraga, Calif.

Sarah Bernson added 14 kills and 11 digs for the Gaels (6-15, 2-5), who won the fifth game despite a .054 attack percentage. GU hit .324 and .357 in winning the first and third games. The Zags (8-11, 2-5) stumbled to minus-.125 hitting in the final game.

Diane Pascua and Theresa Spink had 17 kills apiece, and Pascua, Nicole Lamoure and Aimee Wilson added 12 digs apiece for GU, which has dropped five straight.

Linfield improved its playoff chances by hitting .567 during the third game of a 15-12, 15-12, 15-3 afternoon win over Whitworth at McMinnville, Ore.

Jennifer Svirsky and Sarah Rice combined for 23 kills and both hit .500 or better for the Wildcats (9-5, 6-5), who entered the match in fifth place in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The top four teams qualify for playoffs.

Whitworth tailed off after hitting .524 in the first game. Nicole Brunner had six kills and four blocks for the Pirates, who are seventh in the nine-team NCIC.

Whitworth (5-14, 3-8) then traveled to Salem and lost to third-place Willamette 15-12, 15-4, 15-12. Brenda Clinesmith had 12 digs and Brook Evans seven kills for Whitworth. Devon Bakken, out of University High, had 10 kills for the Bearcats (10-12, 8-4).

Community Colleges of Spokane split four matches at the Mt. Hood Classic in Gresham, Ore.

The Sasquatch swept Lane 15-5, 15-4 in their best match. Their day ended on a 15-8, 15-13 loss to Skagit Valley. JoEne Heimbigner had 78 assists and Kate Antolick 14 blocks during the tourney for CCS.

Kari De Soto had 22 kills and hit .413 to lead visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (14-7, 6-4) to a 13-15, 15-12, 15-9, 15-6 win over Idaho (12-11, 6-4) in a Big West match.

Idaho’s Kyle Leonard totaled 20 kills and 15 digs.

Men’s soccer

Tye Tolentio’s second goal forced overtime, and visiting, second-place Puget Sound (9-3-4) played through two OTs to tie No. 8 Whitworth (4-7-4, 2-7-4) 2-2 in an NCIC match.

Craig Ito and Jason Roberts scored less than 6 minutes apart to give Whitworth a 2-1 lead. Roberts headed in a chip from Aaron Grubb.

The eighth-place Pirates are 4-7-4, 2-7-4. The Loggers (9-3-4, 8-3-3) are in second place, attempting to catch Seattle.

Shane Turpin set up a pair of goals and CCS overcame an injury to starting keeper Ehren Lawhead to beat visiting Edmonds 3-0 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match.

Lawhead injured his leg in a collision with an Edmonds player. He was taken to the hospital, and his status was unknown. Pat Luby filled in and completed the shutout.

Women’s soccer

Stacey Roberts notched her sixth shutout as Whitworth (7-7-2, 7-5-1) and visiting Puget Sound (11-5-3, 8-3-3) played a scoreless tie in an NCIC match.

Jen Mark made 16 saves for the Loggers, who are in third place, one spot ahead of Whitworth. Whitworth outshot UPS 10-2 in the first half.

Holly Vanwert scored twice, including a hard shot from 10 yards, as CCS defeated visiting Edmonds 5-0 in an NWAACC match at SFCC.

Keri Nichols added a late goal after picking up the ball near midfield and dribbling by three defenders.

Cross country

CCS swept the team titles at its Bigfoot Invitational.

Individual champion Shawn Beitlespacher finished the 8,000 meters in 24 minutes, 51 seconds to lead CCS to a meet-low 19 points.

The Sasquatch women scored 34, led by Erika Colin’s third-place showing. Colin ran the 5,000 in 18:31. Kari McKay of the Bloomsday Road Runners won in 17:30.

Crew

Gonzaga’s men and WSU’s women won three races apiece at the Head of the Spokane Regatta on the Spokane River.

GU’s varsity eight, junior varsity eight and freshman eight topped WSU in each men’s 5,000-meter race. WSU turned the tide in each women’s race.

Junior hockey

Rod Kenney’s three goals guided Osoyoos to an 8-3 win over Spokane in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena on Saturday.

The Storm (6-7) broke open the game with a five-goal second period for a 6-1 lead.

Tyler Keller had two assists for the Braves (4-8).
