Turnovers Cost Whits In Loss At Plu

From Staff And Wire Reports

Small-college football

Three quick turnovers pointed Whitworth toward its 29th consecutive loss to Pacific Lutheran.

The Lutes converted two Casey Doyle interceptions into touchdowns, and returned a fumble for another score in jumping ahead 21-0 after one quarter en route to a 45-24 win over the Pirates in Puyallup, Wash.

Dak Jordan of fourth-ranked PLU (6-0, 2-0 Northwest Conference) completed 20 of 23 passes for 259 yards and two TDs. Jordan, fifth all-time in Northwest small-college total offense, moved close to 7,500 yards.

Jordan used seven receivers, hitting Karl Lerum five times for 36 yards. Lerum, whose 3,366 career yards are No. 1 in Northwest small-college history, has 225 career receptions, 23 shy of the record 248 set by Whitworth’s Wayne Ralph (1983-86).

The Pirates (2-5, 1-2) finished with six turnovers.

Whitworth had 308 yards passing, as Tim Mitrovich came off the bench to connect on 18 of 32 for 281 yards and two TDs. Both TD passes went to Matt Stueckle, who also hit a pair of field goals in the first half.
