Fame Horse Trainer Dies

Hall of Fame thoroughbred trainer W.J. “Buddy” Hirsch died in Bal Harbour, Fla., following a long illness. He was 88.

During nearly six decades in racing, Hirsch trained many stakes winners and several champions, among them Gallant Bloom and Canonero II. He won over 1,000 races and more than $15 million in purses.

He was the son of Max Hirsch, who preceded him into the Hall of Fame after training three Kentucky Derby winners and one Triple Crown winner.
