Multiple Sclerosis Association Offers Scholarship To Students

Scholarships are available to high school and college students through the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America’s PROJECT: Learn MS ‘98.

Students must submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay on multiple sclerosis, how it impacts a person in his or her family on a daily basis and how society can improve the quality of life for the physically challenged.

All essays must include registration and sponsor forms and a minimum of $7.50 in sponsor fees. All essays must be postmarked by June 5. For a registration form, see your guidance counselor or call (800)-LEARN-MS.

International Fellowship, a non-profit, high school exchange program is seeking host families for the 1997-98 school year. Exchange students are screened, fully insured and come with their own spending money. They come from 30 different countries and are eager to experience American culture. Members of the Kootenai Medical Center’s Teen Volunteer Program were recently honored for their good work. The program had more than 200 participants who collectively donated nearly 16,000 hours of service. Those honored included: Tina Benham, 3,200 hours; Jeff Bobson, 1,500 hours; Rachel Kelly, 1,200 hours; and Sarah Fahey, 1,200 hours.

These contributions include not only the past summer, but total hours of service. Rachel Kelly of Coeur d’Alene volunteered the most hours this summer alone with 536.

Winter volunteers are needed on weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information call 666-2510.

Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, Boys and Girls Clubs, Girls Inc., Camp Fire and 4-H troops are invited to enter their best community service projects as part of the Colgate Youth for America campaign. The Colgate-Palmolive Company will award cash grants of up to $2,000 for the most creative and best executed projects in the United States.

Clubs have until March 15 to develop and carry out programs and send in their reports. The contest is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
