Mine, Shelling Kill 19 Civilians In Burundi

At least 10 civilians were killed Monday in shelling between Burundi and Tanzania apparently sparked by tensions between the two countries over teeming Hutu rebel camps along the border.

The civilians, along with two Burundian soldiers, were killed in heavy mortar fire at Kabonga, Mugina and Mukerezi, about 50 miles southeast of Bujumbura, near the Tanzanian border, the military said.

Both countries blamed the other for provoking the shootings.

Also on Monday, nine civilians were killed and 47 injured in north-central Burundi when a truck that was taking them to work at a tea plantation drove over an anti-tank mine and blew up.

Military spokesman Lt. Col Isaie Nibizi said the mine was planted by Hutu rebels.
