Two Boys Arrested, Admit Setting Fires At School

From Staff Reports

Two 14-year-old Sacajawea Middle School students were arrested Tuesday after admitting they had set two fires at the school over the weekend.

Other students told Principal Herb Rotchford that the boys had bragged to them about setting the fires, said Spokane fire investigator Lt. Michael Zambryski.

The boys were questioned at the school about 11:40 a.m. by Rotchford, Spokane School District 81 security and Zambryski. At that time, the two admitted the crime.

The youths were booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of second-degree arson, Zambryski said.

Two fires were set late Saturday, one in a plastic garbage can in the parking lot and one in some bushes at the south end of the parking lot.

The fire in the shrubs spread to the side of the school and the roof, causing about $6,000 in damage, Zambryski said.
