Duffy Bishop Headlines Blues Awards

Tonight the Inland Empire Blues Society will bestow awards upon the best blues musicians in our area.

And then one of the best blues musicians in the Northwest will cap the night with what should be a fiery and flamboyant show.

Duffy Bishop and her new band - called Her Palace of Culture - will headline tonight’s event at the Masonic Temple.

Bishop, a dynamic performer who hails from Seattle, is known not only for her scorching vocals but for her dynamic stage presence as well. Her concerts find her dressed in elaborate costumes that range from voodoo priestess to trailer park hussy. Because of her intense demeanor, she’s often compared to Janis Joplin.

Earlier this year, the Washington Blues Society named Bishop Entertainer of the Year and Best Female Vocalist.

Tonight’s awards ceremony begins at 7. Bands from Eastern Washington, North Idaho, Western Montana, Northeastern Oregon and part of British Columbia are eligible.

The Inland Empire Blues Society has been around for five and a half years and has approximately 350 members. Society members and fans voted to select winners in categories such as Best New Blues Band, Best Original Blues Song and Best Place to Get the Blues.

Bishop’s latest album, “Back to the Bone,” is among the competitors for Best Blues Album in the Northwest. She’s up against Too Slim and the Taildraggers’ “Swamp Opera,” Paul Brasch’s “Fit of Blue,” “Hit It ‘n’ Quit It” from Curtis Salgado and Terry Robb, “Not Easily Amused” from The Charles White Band and “Different Point of Blue” from Ellen Whyte and Reflex Blue.
