Five Killed When Van Rolls Over

From Staff And Wire Reports

Five men were killed and seven men injured when the van they were riding in lost control and rolled over and over before coming to rest about 200 feet from U.S. 97.

The men were not from Oregon, but Oregon State Police had not yet released their names or hometowns pending notification of relatives.

Four men died at the scene. The fifth died at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles.

The driver was transported to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland with a neck fracture. University Hospital could not locate information about the man’s condition without the his name, they said.

Two other men were in stable condition at Hood River Memorial Hospital. Four others had been treated and released from area hospitals.

The Dodge van was driving north about 8:30 a.m. when the driver apparently drifted onto the shoulder as the van entered a left-hand curve, police said.

The driver apparently over-corrected, and the van rolled several times off the highway, down an embankment.

Four men were ejected from the van.
