In 1666: Thomas Farynor, the baker to the King of England, was awakened by the smell of smoke. His bakery was on fire, but he and his family escaped. The fire raged through London for four days, destroying 13,000 homes and 87 churches and killing eight.

In 1901: Teddy Roosevelt said his famous words, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

In 1921: The first bowling shirt was designed.

In 1945: On the battleship Missouri, Japanese delegates signed a formal document of surrender, ending World War II.

In 1965: The Beatles released their hit “Yesterday.”
