Local Church Plans Service For Princess

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will hold a memorial service at 4 p.m. Friday to honor Princess Diana.

Episcopal churches across the country are holding similar memorials. The public service of praying and singing will occur in the main sanctuary of the South Hill church at 57th and Perry.

Mourners will have the opportunity to donate to one or more of the 16 causes and charities that Princess Diana championed before her death.

The service is being organized by Richard Davis, a relocated Englishman and a member of St. Stephen’s.

Davis said he felt the need to express his grief from the other side of the world. He first considered attending a service in Portland or Seattle, then decided to organize one for Spokane.

“We have to honor this incredible lady who charmed people all over the world, who died so unnecessarily and is grieved by everyone,” he said.

Although independent, the Episcopal Church of America is closely related to the Church of England, to which the royal family belongs. Episcopalians pray for the Archbishop of Canterbury at weekly worship services.
