Associated Press

Dameyune Craig threw two touchdown passes to Karsten Bailey and scored on a 17-yard scramble as No. 16 Auburn defeated Virginia 28-17 in a season opener Thursday night at Charlottesville, Va.

Craig directed a 98-yard, six-minute scoring drive that put Auburn ahead for good in the second quarter. He completed passes of 19, 35 and 7 yards and ran 17 yards for a touchdown on a scramble after finding no open receiver.

Claude Mathis ran for a 4-yard touchdown and became the all-time rushing leader at Southwest Texas and David Williams threw a pair of scoring passes in the Bobcats’ 24-14 victory over the Hornets at San Marcos, Texas.

The game was a season opener for both teams.

Notes

Quarterback Ron Curry, perhaps the nation’s most prized football recruit, has decided to attend Virginia, a school official confirmed Thursday.

As a junior, Curry led Hampton High School to an undefeated season and the state football championship last year. He was named Virginia’s player of the year, then followed it by winning the same honor in basketball.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Curry was acclaimed by most recruiting analysts as the nation’s top quarterback prospect and among the best point guards in basketball.

Alabama’s swift suspension of defensive lineman Michael Myers came partly to avoid a repeat of the 1993 player-agent case that landed the Crimson Tide on probation.

Four years ago, the school was slow to notify the NCAA that Antonio Langham had received money from a sports agent after the 1993 Sugar Bowl. Alabama was hit with two years’ probation.

Myers was suspended Wednesday, six days after Alabama received word from the NCAA of his possible contact with an agent.
