1972: Members of the Palestinian Black September movement broke into the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany, and attacked the Israeli building with machine guns. A coach and an athlete were shot to death and nine others were taken hostage. An attempt to rescue the hostages failed and all nine were killed along with four of their kidnappers.

1975: An assassination attempt against President Gerald R. Ford ended when a Secret Service agent wrestled a gun from Lynette Fromme in Sacramento, Calif. Fromme was a follower of Charles Manson.
