French-Speakers Upset Over His Stern Frankness

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

We know what to expect from shock-jocks. We’ve seen “Private Parts.” We listen to Don Imus (on that local radio station that will go unmentioned because Imus says bad things about the late Princess Diana).

We also know to ignore them.

Someone should tell that to the French-speaking residents of Montreal, who responded to Howard Stern’s inaugural broadcast in both that city and Toronto with disgust and rage.

“Paid by anglophone radio, he vomits on francophones!” read Wednesday’s front-page banner headline in the French-language newspaper Journal de Montreal.

What caused the overreaction? Stern called French-speakers nasty names - rather innocuous names, actually - and said they should all be speaking English.

Loose talk

Sean Penn on emphasizing the worth of family over the demands of Hollywood (as reported by the Miami Herald): “The priority’s so damned clear. Living your art doesn’t mean putting your career first. Living your art is being true to growth and love.”

One thing, she always knows to do the right thing

Rosie Perez turns 33 today.

And don’t forget those alphalfa-sprout salads

Michael Eisner, the big guy at the Walt Disney Co., is doing his best to stay healthy three years after having heart surgery. Yet he isn’t happy. “My diet these days seems as if it consists entirely of whole grain sprouted wheat bread, cruciferous vegetables and spring water.”

They’re all now hearing those good vibrations

Look for sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson to release their CD “The Wilsons” with a single (“Monday Without You”) they recorded with dad, Brian Wilson. The former Beach Boy has long fought drug addiction and emotional demons. But, says 29-year-old Carnie, dad Wilson “is remarried, has a new baby, works out every day… he’s healthy and vibrant, very coherent - it’s remarkable and wonderful to see.”

We sort of think that’s a pretty good idea

Asked why he turned down the offer of a job working for Imelda Marcos, ex-presidential adviser Dick Morris said, “I am sort of making an effort not to work for bad people.”

And remember, he is the world, he is the children

Reports from the talk-show war between Keenen Ivory Wayans and “Vibe” are that Wayans is winning more fans. Still, “Vibe” gets bigger stars - such as as Mel Gibson, Demi Moore and James Brown. We’re sure it’s just a coincidence that “Vibe” was created by Quincy Jones.

Flashback to a best-seller: ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy’

With the death of Princess Diana, Warner Books considered holding up publication of former Spokane resident Kitty Kelley’s book “The Royals.” But as a half million copies had already been printed - and after much in-house “agonizing,” reports the New York Post - the book will be printed on schedule.
