Hawks’ Clocks Ticking Seahawks Aim For Quicker Huddles To Spur Offense

Tacoma News Tribune

For the Seahawks to win against the Denver Broncos Sunday, players know that they will have to pick up the pace, in more ways than one.

Quarterback Warren Moon knows he will have to do so in the huddle. One of the problems spotted during the Seahawks’ 41-3 opening loss to the New York Jets was the offense and defense were sluggish coming out of the huddle.

After huddling over the problem, the Seahawks hope to have found a solution.

“We increased our tempo as far as getting in and getting out of the huddles,” Moon said. “We did the same things on defense. We need to do that so that we have time to execute plays. Coach Erickson’s big concern after watching the film was that he didn’t like the overall personality of how we were getting in and out of huddles.”

Normally, Moon said the offense likes to be heading to the line of scrimmage with around 17 seconds left on the 40-second clock. Too many times, they went to the line with 10 or 11 seconds remaining last week.

“You are not on the clock in practice, so you tend to do things slower,” Moon said. “But when you get into games, the clock is there to make it move along. You have to realize that the clock is ticking the whole time.”

After a couple of days of work, Erickson is pleased with the new tempo. Sunday, he’ll see how it looks in a game.

Notes

The Seahawks’ inactive list for this week was predictable. It featured only injured players - quarterback John Friesz, wide receiver James McKnight, defensive end Martin Harrison and fullback Oscar Gray. Wide receiver Andre Coleman will be one of the three inactive players announced on Sunday… . Wide receiver Brian Blades caught some passes with his sore hands, which have two dislocated fingers. Erickson said it shouldn’t be too much of a problem in the game… . The Seahawks released center David Kempfert from the practice squad because they were too close to the salary cap. Kempfert, who was paid for the week, is expected to re-sign on Monday.
