The short holiday week saw big moves in banking, computers and sugar making.

On Wednesday, Wm. Wrigley Jr.

Co. filed for U.S. and international patents to use Biospherics’ tagatose nonfattening sugar in chewing gum. Stock of Biospherics, based in Beltsville, Md., jumped $8 to $12.13 Wednesday on the NASDAQ, then fell back. Its stock still closed at $7.13 on Friday, up from last week’s close of $3.88… Meanwhile, power-conversion equipment maker Zytec saw its stock price rise Wednesday when rival Computer Products Inc. agreed to acquire the Minneapolis-based company. Zytec’s stock rose $7.44 to close at $36.44 on Wednesday. Zytec’s stock closed at $37.94 on Friday’s NASDAQ, up from last week’s close of $29.50.

What’s Not

On Wednesday JPM, maker of equipment for home-entertainment appliance manufacturers saw its shares drop $6 to $26.

The company warned that it expects earnings for its fourth quarter ending Sept. 30 to come in lower than analysts estimate. The Lewisburg, Pa., company said seasonal slowness in July continued into August. On Friday, its stock closed at $27.75 a share, down from last Friday’s close of $34.25. JPM is traded on the NASDAQ.
