Valley Chamber Of Commerce President Ray Murphy Resigns

Ray Murphy, president of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, has resigned to pursue a private business venture.

Murphy, who has been credited with helping boost membership and enthusiasm within the Chamber, will step down Monday. He has led the chamber for just under three years.

“The suddenness of it came as a surprise,” said Jim Huttenmaier, who will serve as interim director while the Chamber’s executive committee searches for a replacement.

Murphy, who could not be reached for comment, has become involved in a business that puts internet capability on television monitors, Chamber officials said.

“Ray has told me he’s just decided he has some goals he wants to accomplish,” said Robert Henry, chairman of the board.

Henry credited Murphy with bringing an aggressive attitude to the chamber.

“Up to three years ago, the chamber wasn’t an active organization, especially in the summertime,” said Huttenmaier, who has served as membership development director for the past two years.

Murphy supported active recruitment, Huttenmaier said, and in the last two years, membership has jumped from about 500 to 750.

“He has a very outgoing personality,” Huttenmaier said. “He could be a real businessman when needed, but he could also have fun.”

Murphy submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday. He will continue to participate in the Valley chamber as a member.

The executive committee will begin its search for a new president this month. It hopes to fill the position within 90 days.

“We’ll want to cast the net as wide as possible,” Henry said.

Murphy’s replacement, Henry said, will come in at a time of great opportunity and growth for the Chamber.

“The Valley is becoming one of the major regional retail centers,” Henry said. “This is just a tremendously interesting time.”

Murphy took over as executive director in October of 1994, replacing Kay Moland, who had served in the position for 20 years.

Before coming to the Valley, Murphy was executive director of the Moscow (Idaho) Chamber of Commerce, and had also worked as an accountant, stockbroker, assistant athletic director for development at the University of Idaho and campaign finance director for an Idaho congressional candidate.
