Inland Empire Softball Hall Of Fame Inducts 12

The Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame inducted 12 new members at a ceremony Saturday night in the Spokane Valley.

Fuzzy Buckenberger, recently selected to coach the U.S. men’s modified team in the 1998 World Games, was one of four managers inducted. Buckenberger is the current commissioner of the Spokane Amateur Softball Association, a position his father, Clarence Buckenberger, held for many years. Clarence Buckenberger also is a member of the Hall of Fame.

Stan Phelps, an outstanding player for the Spokane Rainiers-sponsored team in the 1950s who now lives in Snohomish; Bill Dalgarn, who started his softball career in 1938 and was an all-state player in ‘42 with the Golden Age Brewery, a team that finished second in the state tournament; and Tom McLoughlin are the other managers inducted.

Other inductees include Davenport’s Dwayne Emery, a modified pitcher who started his career in 1972 and pitched in nine national tournaments in 15 years; Jane Machen, an outstanding women’s pitcher for Maxwell House Tavern, who started playing in 1962; and Dick Mackenzie, who started in 1954 and played 40 years.

Don Brock Sr. was inducted as an an umpire. He started in 1963 and has umpired four national tournaments.

Also inducted was Buck Wilhelm, who is also a member of the Idaho State Hall of Fame. He played fastpitch in Coeur d’Alene in the 1950s and later managed several slowpitch teams to state titles.

Bill Reilly was actually voted in two years ago, but organizers couldn’t locate him. Reilly, who lives in Springfield, Ore., was an outfielder with Jensen-Byrd Hardware.

Carol Kincaid and Hattie Lollis were entered into the Hall of Honor for their loyal support of area softball.

Baseball

University High School will conduct an alumni game fund-raiser at the school Sept. 20.

Former Titans are invited to play. The game is to raise money for outdoor batting cages near the field at the school.

Basketball

Andrea Kallas, a 1997 graduate of Central Valley, has signed a letter of intent to play at Montana State-Billings.

Kallas, a shooting guard, averaged 14 points per game for the Bears, who placed second in the State AAA tournament. She was a first-team All-Greater Spokane League selection. She also played on the Spokane Stars 18-U team that placed third nationally.

The Yellowjackets, an NCAA Division II team, return five starters from a record-breaking season.

Able-bodied athletes who would like to try their hand at wheelchair basketball are being recruited to play in the first AB Wheelchair Tournament Sept. 19-20.

The event, sponsored by St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, is a fund-raiser for the Spokane Cyclones and Spokane Drifters wheelchair teams.

Entry fee is $250 per team, which can be all male, all female or coed. Teams need a minimum of five players to a maximum 15. Wheelchairs will be provided.

The Spokane Stars’ weekly basketball skills camp for girls in grades 4-12 will run Sundays weekly from Oct. 5 through the first week in March at Centennial Middle School (915 N. Ella Road). Cost is $50 a month.

Ron Adams, director of the Stars, heads up the staff that includes Stars assistants and players.

Softball

The Spokane Softball Umpires Association will hold a training clinic Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep in Room 11 for anyone 16 and older interested in umpiring junior high fastpitch softball this fall.

Swimming

Spokane Area Swimming will conduct three free clinics and tryouts for youngsters ages 6-16 interested in joining its competitive team.

Sessions will be held Sept. 16 (freestyle), Sept. 18 (backstroke) and Sept. 19 (breaststroke/butterfly). All will be from 5-6 p.m. in the Shadle Park pool. Swimmers should plan to attend all three. A parents meeting is planned for Sept. 19 at 5:15 p.m.

Synchronized swimming

The Spokane Silver Mermaids competitive team will conduct tryouts for the 1997-98 season Saturday at the Shadle Park pool.

Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. with tryouts starting at 4. Prospects will demonstrate their swimming and floating skills. A parents meeting will be held while the swimmers are in the water.

Miscellany

Eagle Rehab, involved in sports and occupational physical therapy, is offering free athletic injury screening Monday from 6-7 p.m. at 9222 Newport Highway.

The injury screening is open to anyone who would like to have an evaluation of an athletic injury to determine if they would benefit from counsel on rehabilitation, exercise and the prevention of further injury.

Appointments aren’t necessary, but are encouraged.
