Quick Kicks

Heisman watch

Tennessee’s Peyton Manning is still the man.

In a 30-24 victory over UCLA, the senior quarterback completed 28 of 49 passes for 341 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He has 8,033 career passing yards, 651 in two games this season.

If Iowa continues to feature Tavian Banks, he may quickly become a serious contender. Against Division I-AA Northern Iowa, he rushed for 203 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb remains a longshot, especially since the Orangemen are 1-2. But he threw for 223 yards and ran for another 61 in a loss at Oklahoma.

N.D. flooded with fans, water

Even the newly expanded Notre Dame Stadium had a rough day.

A water line burst shortly before halftime, flooding the stadium’s lower concourse. There was an inch of standing water in some places.

Saturday’s game, a 17-13 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Tech, was the first in the new Notre Dame Stadium, which seats 80,225, an increase of more than 21,000 seats.

Fortney’s Iowa nightmare II

Shane Fortney, a fifth-year senior transfer from Washington, made his debut with Northern Iowa in a 66-0 loss to Iowa.

Fortney completed 19 of 40 passes for 179 yards and was intercepted four times. The last time he faced Iowa, the Hawkeyes embarrassed his Huskies 38-18 in the 1995 Sun Bowl.

Fortney, backing up Damon Huard, was 5 of 11 for 56 yards with one interception in that one.

N.D. No. 1 with pros

Notre Dame placed the most players on National Football League opening-day rosters for the third consecutive year.

Forty-four players from Notre Dame were on NFL rosters.

Miami ranks second with 37 players and Penn State is third with 36.

Stars and stats

Oregon State has had 26 consecutive losing seasons, the longest streak of futility in major-college history.

Oregon State, which completed 37 passes last season in coach Jerry Pettibone’s option attack, was 24 for 41 for 273 yards in Mike Riley’s debut as coach.

Cal senior Bobby Shaw caught 11 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

Stanford quarterback Chad Hutchinson finished 18 of 36 for 302 yards.

Michael Pittman, who was benched for last week’s opener, ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns for Fresno State.

Mike McQueary, Penn State, threw for a school-record 366 yards.

DeMond Parker, Oklahoma, ran for 239 yards.

Tim Couch, Kentucky, completed 39 of 61 passes for 349 yards and four TDs.

Looking ahead

Colorado plays at Michigan next Saturday in what is becoming one of the nation’s hottest intersectional rivalries. In another intersectional game featuring two ranked teams, Stanford will be at North Carolina as both teams figure to learn how legitimate their conference-championship aspirations may be.
