Psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl, who transformed years of suffering in Nazi concentration camps into insights for his lifelong study of man’s quest for meaning, died Tuesday. He was 92.

Sir Rudolph Bing, the autocratic impresario who brought the Metropolitan Opera to new heights in artistic achievement and popularity during his 22 years as general manager, died Tuesday in Yonkers. He was 95 and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Retiring

Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, a passionate liberal who was the first Hispanic elected to Congress from Texas, said Wednesday he would retire this year after more than three decades in Congress.

Decisions

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt has approved plans by the Kalispel Tribe to build a casino near Airway Heights. The future of the proposed $17 million facility now rests with Washington state Gov. Gary Locke.
