Eagles Stun The Packers

Associated Press

So much for the Green Bay Packers’ talk of an undefeated season.

Rookie Ryan Longwell missed what would have been the game-winning field goal with 11 seconds left, and Ty Detmer threw for the game’s only touchdown with 1:56 left as the host Philadelphia Eagles upset the defending Super Bowl champions 10-9 Sunday.

Longwell, who hadn’t missed a field goal attempt in either the exhibition or regular season, was wide right from 28 yards out, touching off a wild celebration at Veterans Stadium.

The Packers (1-1) lost for the first time in 10 games, including their playoff run to the championship last year. The Eagles were beaten 31-17 by the Giants in their opener.

Detmer’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Solomon capped an 80-yard, 19-play drive that took 9:22. It ended when, on fourth down, Detmer found a wide-open Solomon in the back of the end zone.

The Packers had a chance to win after Solomon’s touchdown when Bill Schroeder returned the ensuing kickoff to their 47.

After Brett Favre, who finished 19 of 42 for 279 yards, led the Packers to the Eagles 10, Longwell, who converted kicks from 22, 18 and 27 earlier in the game, missed the short field goal.

Longwell, a free agent who got his chance when third-round draft choice Brett Conway was injured in training camp, hadn’t missed a field goal or extra point attempt in either the exhibition or regular season.

“It may have an effect on it, but that’s not why I missed the kick,” he said of the rain. “I just have to learn to relax and take my time and not rush my kicks.”

He was 6 for 6 in field goal attempts and 10 for 10 on extra point tries before the season, and was 6 for 6 with three PATs in the regular season.

Dolphins 16, Oilers 13 (OT)

At Miami, Dan Marino rebounded from a poor opening-game performance with his first 300-yard passing day since 1995.

Marino, who passed for only 105 yards against Indianapolis last week, completed 24 of 43 attempts for 324 yards against Tennessee (1-1). The Dolphins (2-0) won it on rookie Olindo Mare’s 29-yard field goal with 12:45 left in OT.

49ers 15, Rams 12

At St. Louis, the 49ers (1-1) overcame a shaky showing by rookie QB Jim Druckenmiller to beat the Rams for the 14th straight time.

Druckenmiller, filling in for injured Steve Young, was intercepted three times and passed for only 102 yards and one score in his first NFL start. The Rams (1-1) were hurt by four turnovers.

Patriots 31, Colts 6

At Indianapolis, Drew Bledsoe threw four TD passes for the second straight week as New England routed the Colts (0-2).

Bledsoe completed 15 of 25 passes for 267 yards. Curtis Martin rushed for 121 yards as the Patriots improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1986.

Bills 28, Jets 22

At East Rutherford, N.J., Todd Collins threw three TD passes as Buffalo (1-1) rebounded from an opening loss to defeat the Jets (1-1).

The Bills’ defense, led by Bryce Paup, had eight sacks. Aaron Glenn scored on a 96-yard kickoff return for the Jets.

Ravens 23, Bengals 10

At Baltimore, Vinny Testaverde threw a pivotal touchdown pass to Eric Green with 9:36 left and the Ravens avoided another late collapse to beat the Bengals (1-1). The Ravens (1-1), who had lost nine of their last 11 games despite holding a second-half lead, took the lead for good on Jay Graham’s 5-yard TD run late in the third quarter.

Panthers 9, Falcons 6

At Atlanta, Steve Beuerlein downed the ball with one second left and John Kasay followed with his third field goal of the fourth quarter, a 39-yarder that lifted the Panthers (1-1) over the Falcons (0-2).

Both offenses struggled without their starting QBs - Carolina’s Kerry Collins didn’t play because of a broken jaw and Atlanta’s Chris Chandler was sidelined by a concussion in the second quarter.

Vikings 27, Bears 24

At Chicago, Brad Johnson and Chris Walsh connected on the winning, 9-yard TD pass with 37 seconds left.

Johnson completed 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards, including 7 of 9 on the final 61-yard drive for Minnesota (2-0). The Bears (0-2) had taken a 24-20 lead on Raymont Harris’ 59-yard run with 11:52 left.

Chargers 20, Saints 6

At New Orleans, Jim Everett beat his old team and coach Mike Ditka, the man who cut him.

Everett, who believes Ditka didn’t give him a fair chance to retain the starting spot with the Saints (0-2), sealed the victory for San Diego (1-1) with a 21-yard scoring pass to Freddie Jones with 2:10 left.

Buccaneers 24, Lions 17

At Pontiac, Mich., Tampa Bay rookie Warrick Dunn rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, while Detroit star Barry Sanders was shut down for the second straight week. Sanders, who led the NFL in rushing last year, was held to 20 yards on 10 carries. The Bucs improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1992.

Steelers 14, Redskins 13

At Pittsburgh, Jerome Bettis carried on all but two plays on a 72-yard fourth-quarter scoring drive that rallied the Steelers (1-1) past mistake-riddled Washington (1-1). Bettis ran for 134 yards against what was the NFL’s worst rushing defense last season.

Jaguars 40, Giants 13

At Jacksonville, Fla., quarterback Steve Matthews played with poise in his first NFL start, leading the Jaguars (2-0) to the highest point total in their three-year history.

Matthews, claimed off waivers last month, completed 23 of 35 for 252 yards.

Cardinals 25, Cowboys 22 (OT)

At Tempe, Ariz., Kent Graham, overcoming boos and three lost fumbles, led Arizona back from a 15-point deficit, and Kevin Butler completed the Cardinals’ first victory over Dallas in seven years with a 20-yard field goal in overtime.

The kick hit the left upright, but went through with 6:30 left in OT.
