Cougars Sweep For An 8-0 Start

Sixth-ranked Washington State University remained unbeaten in volleyball with a three-game sweep of Wyoming on Monday night before 933 fans in Bohler Gym in Pullman.

The Cougars improved to 8-0 with a 15-8, 15-6, 15-10 sweep of the Cowgirls (3-4) in the non-conference match.

Senior Keren Oigman led the Cougars with 12 kills and had a .500 hitting percentage. Shannon Wyckoff contributed 10 kills and a match-high .714 hitting percentage. Jennifer Stinson put on a defensive display with eight blocks and a team-leading nine digs.

Wyoming was led by Julie Overton with eight kills, and Vanessa Kiremidjian led all players with 31 assists. This weekend, the Cougars play in the Rhode Island tournament with Villanova, Providence and the hosts.

Eastern Washington’s Kim Exner is the Big Sky Conference player of the week after leading the Eagles to the All-Star Cafe/UNLV Classic title in Las Vegas.

Exner, a junior middle blocker from Vernon, British Columbia, totaled 58 kills in 12 games and hit .328 to earn tourney MVP honors. She had a match-high 20 kills and seven blocks in the Eagles’ championshipmatch win against conference foe Cal State Northridge.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga University forward Sara Streufert of Spokane was named the West Coast Conference player of the week for the week ending Aug. 31 for her four-goal performance in a 7-0 win over Whitman. She’s a freshman from University High.

Golf

An amateur stole the show in the Athletic Round Table Pro-Senior Monday at Hayden Lake Country Club.

Jim O’Rourke of the Spokane Country Club fashioned a 4-under-par 66 on nines of 36-30 for a one-shot victory over professional Alan Jenkins of Esmeralda (36-31).

Pros Dave Christenson of Indian Canyon and Dan Porter of Downriver had matching 34-34-68s.

Net leaders were Ed Stocklen, Ponderosa Springs, with a 64 in the 0-8 handicap division; Howard Jensen, Hangman Valley, 64 in 9-13; and Del Sanford, Hidden Lakes, 63 in 14 and up.

Four Spokane golfers are within four shots of the lead after the first round of the Northwest Open Invitational at Bend, Ore.

Amateur Chad Gaffaney of Esmeralda and professional Michael Rorholm shot par 72s with Indian Canyon pro Gary Lindeblad and Manito’s Steve Prugh at 73.

Spokane native Chris Mitchell, now at Tumwater Valley, was at 1-under 71.

Four are tied for the lead with 3-under 69s. The 54-hole tournament continues through Wednesday.
