Obituaries

Kenneth McCreight Spokane

Viewing and visitation for Kenneth A. McCreight, 87, will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. McCreight, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Mr. McCreight worked as an electrician and on numerous construction projects at Hanford and in Spokane. He also worked for Electric Smith for a number of years.

He was a member of Manito Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, National Rifle Association and Electrical Engineers Association.

His wife, Ester, died in 1992.

Survivors include a brother, Glenn McCreight of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Norma Eliason Spokane

Visitation for Norma Rebecca Eliason, 93, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Eliason, who was born in Saskatchewan, died Friday.

She married Oscar Eliason in 1924 and moved to Spokane in 1925.

Mrs. Eliason became a United States citizen in 1941.

She worked with her husband in upholstery shop they owned.

She was a member of First Assembly of God.

Her husband died in 1990.

Survivors include three daughters, Edith Wisecarver of Spokane, Ethel Woll of Indio, Calif., and Julie Meier of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Allen Sandage of White Rock, British Columbia; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Walker Spokane

Graveside service for Dorothy L. Walker, 84, will be at 11 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Walker, died Thursday.

She was a 1932 graduate of Hillyard High School.

In 1933 she married Edwin Walker.

Mrs. Walker was a licensed practical nurse and was involved in the founding of the Guild School.

Mrs. Walker was active in the Easter Seal Society and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Sandy Sue’s Garden Club.

Her husband died in 1982.

Survivors include three sons, David Walker of Liberty Lake, Larry Walker of Spokane and Jerry Walker of Puyallup, Wash.; two daughters, Patsy Keller of Rockford, Wash., and Shirley Walker of Seattle; a sister, Mary McGeorge of Spokane; nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Harry Wakefield Spokane

Service for Harry M. Wakefield, 83, was Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at 11 a.m. today at the Moscow (Idaho) Cemetery.

Mr. Wakefield, who was born in Emmett, Idaho, died Saturday.

In 1932 he graduated from Fruitland (Idaho) High School. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1941.

Mr. Wakefield worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a soil scientist in California, Oregon and Alaska. He retired in 1970.

In 1981, his first wife, Frances Wakefield, died.

He moved to Spokane in 1983 from Coquille, Ore.

Mr. Wakefield was member of Central Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis Club International.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ellis Wakefield; four sons, Terry Wakefield of Seattle, Rob Wakefield of Portland, and Frank and Ed Ellis, both of Spokane; two daughters, Janet Davis of Graham, Wash., and Katheryn Hulquist of Moscow; and 13 grandchildren.

Joseph ‘Bill’ Tully Spokane

Funeral Mass for Joseph William “Bill” Tully, 82, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tully, who was born in Sprague, Wash., died Friday.

In 1955, he married Kathleen “Kitty” Brophy in Sprague.

Mr. Tully was a resident of Sprague for 55 years.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Knights of Columbus, Washington State Service Station Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Francis of Assisi Men’s Club.

Mr. Tully was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theater. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gerald Tully of Spokane; three daughters, Marilyn Corey, Kathy Husted and Jackie Hogan, all of Spokane; a brother, Patrick Tully of Spokane; a sister, Mary Lou Bierman of Priest Lake, Idaho; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Lucille Peters Spokane

Service for Lucille F. Peters, 75, will be at 10 a.m. todayat Foothills Community Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peters, who was born in Eugene, Ore., died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 60 years.

Survivors include four sons, Vernon, Terry, Gene and George Peters Jr., all of Spokane; a daughter, Peggy Ives of Spokane; two brothers, Richard Symons of Circle, Ark. and Ed Low of Kalispell, Mont.; a sister, Betty Jones of Sapulpa, Okla.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jim Herrmann Greenacres

Memorial service for Jim Herrmann, 43, will be at 10 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Herrmann, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

He graduated from West Valley High School and worked for Dellen Wood Products for 12 years in the maintenance department.

He is survived by his parents, Ted and Mae Herrmann of Spokane; and two sisters, Pattie Powers and Kim Breen, both of Spokane.

Lyle Nelson Spokane

Service for Lyle H. Nelson, 84, will be at 1 p.m, today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Nelson, who died Friday. was born in Long Prarie, Minn.

He was a 47-year Spokane resident and worked as a mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Harold Nelson of Hood River, Ore., and Keith Nelson of Puyallup, Wash.; two brothers, Reuben Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Chester Nelson of Chimacum, Wash.; three sisters, Dorothy Allen of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Lila Ownes of Billings, Mont., and Lucille Carlson of Spokane.

Donald Johns Cataldo, Idaho

An open house for Donald E. Johns, 49, was Monday at the family home in Cataldo. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johns, who was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, died Friday.

He grew up in Iowa and served with the Navy from 1965 to 1968, including one year in Vietnam as a gunner’s mate on a river patrol boat.

Mr. Johns moved to North Idaho in 1968 and graduated from the University of Idaho in 1973 with a degree in civil engineering.

He had worked for RAHCO International in Spokane as safety, quality assurance and hazardous waste manager.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Ann; a son, Scott Johns, and a daughter, Sarah Johns, both at home; three brothers, Dale Johns of Kellogg, Harold Johns of Iowa and Vernon Johns of Nebraska.

James Shafer Spokane

Visitation for James L. Shafer, 86, will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday. Private burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Shafer, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Saturday.

He graduated from Republic High School.

Mr. Shafer and his wife, Sarah Bonita Dearing Shafer, were dairy farmers.

He was a member of Mead United Methodist Church, Mead Lodge 146, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Peone Prairie Grange.

His wife died in 1987.

Survivors include a brother, Frank Shafer of Spokane; three sisters, Pauline Glick and Margaret Shafer, both of Los Angeles, and Aileen Kinney of Spokane.

Dorla Payne Coeur d’Alene

Service for Dorla D. Payne, 67, was Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial was at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Payne, who was born in Bison, S.D., died Saturday.

She married Cletis Payne in 1947. He died in 1985.

Mrs. Payne was a homemaker and was a member of the Spokane Rock Rollers Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post Falls Senior Center. She was also a Cub Scout den mother.

Survivors include two sons, Don Payne of Oregon City, Ore., and Ray Payne of Moscow, Idaho; three daughters, Judy Haslet and Margaret Winkler, both of Spokane, and Peggy Hogeweide of Post Falls; a sister, Dorothy Buss of Florence, Ore; 12 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Derrill DeMent Priest River

At his request, no service will be held for Derrill DeMent, 64. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. DeMent, who was born in Caldwell, Idaho, died Sept. 3.

He graduated from Mary Walker High School in Springdale, Wash., and also attended North Idaho College.

Mr. DeMent was the former owner of Double D Service & Towing in Spokane and then worked as a truck driver for Spalding Auto Parts for more than 20 years.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1967 and taught hunter’s safety education in Idaho and Spokane for many years.

He taught shooting sports in 4-H and was past president of the 4-H Leaders Council.

He was a member and past master of the Edgemere Grange No. 355.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sharon; four sons, Larry DeMent of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Steven DeMent of Arizona, Jeff DeMent of Post Falls and Rodney DeMent of Spokane; a daughter, Kathy DeMent of Spokane; his mother, Edith DeMent of Spokane; four brothers, Basil, Bill and Dell DeMent, all of Spokane, and Boyd Cookson of Homedale, Idaho; a sister, Clarisa Madison of Spokane; and 11 grandchildren.

Doris Faulker Spokane

Memorial service for Doris Irene Faulkner, 85, will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Out Savior’s Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Mrs. Faulkner died Wednesday.

She married Edgar Faulkner in 1929.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1934 and then to Spokane in 1941.

Mrs. Faulkner was a homemaker and was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband died in 1980.

Survivors include a niece and nephews.

Charles Gilson Spokane

Memorial service for Charles W. Gilson, 83, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Gilson, who was born in Minneapolis, died Thursday.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1934 to 1938 and was part of a United States Embassy communications staff in China from 1935 to 1939.

Mr. Gilson joined the Civil Aeronautics Agency as an air traffic controller during World War II.

He married Helen Lagerstrom in 1944.

In 1955 he transferred to Spokane to develop the air traffic control system. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Gilson was a member of the Estancia (N.M.) Masonic Lodge No. 33, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Society of Wireless Pioneers, Society of Airway Pioneers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Lilac City SAMS RV Club. He was also a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League and the Inland Empire VHF Radio Amateur Club.

Survivors include his wife Helen; two sons William and Alan Gilson both of Spokane; a daughter, Diana Payne of Port Orchard, Wash.; a brother George Gilson of San Deigo; a sister Betty Seaver of Storrs, Conn.; and six grandchildren.

Marie Loy Spokane

Service for Marie Berg Loy, 96, was Monday at Riverview Retirement Community. Private burial was at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Dazy, S.D., Mrs. Loy died Friday.

She was a resident of Spokane for 59 years.

She married Hjalmer Berg in 1926 and in 1938 she moved to Spokane.

Mr. Berg died in 1959.

In 1966, she married Ernest Loy. He died in 1970.

Mrs. Loy was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sons, Duane Berg of Hayden, Idaho and Marlin Berg of Milwaukie, Ore.; a sister, Rose Koch of Valley City, N.D.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Tesdahl Spokane

Graveside service for Elizabeth I. Tesdahl, 85, was Monday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Tesdahl, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

In 1943, she married Edward Tesdahl.

She graduated from Eastern Washington University and taught elementary school in Spokane for 40 years.

Survivors include her husband; and a brother, Bob Caldwell of Seattle.
