Cda Gets The Win, And A Boot, To Boot

Dustin Newlun Correspondent

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings defeated the Lake City Timberwolves 2-0 Tuesday night in the first girls soccer game between the two teams this year.

The prize? A golden boot.

“We thought we’d just pick things up a little bit and try to get more fans,” said coach Geary Jerde of the Vikings, whose record is 4-0 this year. “The team that scores the most goals takes the boot home until the next game. If it’s a tie game, the one who has it, keeps it.”

CdA possessed the ball most of the evening, attempting 25 shots at the T-Wolves’ net. LC responded with only six attempts, three in the first half, three in the second.

“I think we got frustrated because we weren’t scoring,” said LC coach Jim Facciano, whose team went 0-3 last year against the Viks. “The girls started getting tired, their sore legs started working on them, and then it just kind of became sloppy soccer. They started bootin’ (the ball) again.”

Sophomores Janee Andre and Maura Montreuil, both forwards, were key players for Coeur d’Alene.

Andre scored both goals for the the Viks, starting with the first one 13 minutes into the first half. Junior Lauren Vogt dribbled down the field, passing the ball to Andre for point.

Andre scored the second goal with an assist from Montreuil, halfway through the first half after the T-Wolves turned over the ball after a pushing penalty.

Montreuil also contributed seven steals.

Andre didn’t see much action in the second half after the T-Wolves concentrated their efforts on her.

“We marked Janee,” explained Facciano. “I put my quickest player on her and I think that kind of factored her out of the game. In Janee’s case, she gets the ball so much, if you have someone marking her, they’re right there to steal it until the coach notices we’re marking and takes her out of the game.”

Facciano also attributed CdA’s lack of second-half success to goalkeeper Jeanne Russel.

Geary, in his first year coaching Coeur d’Alene, has a young team, with only three seniors. But he doesn’t see that as a problem, especially now that the Vikings are 5-0.

“Let’s put it this way,” said Geary with a confident grin. “My strikers say, ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner,’ my midfielders say, ‘Catch us if you can,’ and my defense says, ‘Come on down.”’
