Mead, Ferris Win Volleyball Openers

State tournament veterans Mead and Ferris stated their cases as Greater Spokane League volleyball opened Tuesday.

Mead, third at last year’s State AAA tournament, opened with a 15-9, 15-6, 15-6 victory at Rogers.

Ferris, sixth at state and defending GSL champion, notched a 15-6, 15-3, 15-8 win at Central Valley.

At Rogers, Krista Nelson and Kortney Stewart had eight kills apiece for the Panthers. Monica Abrahamson of the Pirates had 17 kills and five blocks.

At CV, Missy Blackshire’s nine kills, seven aces and three blocks guided the Saxons. Rikki Jackson of the Bears had six kills.

Ferris is at home tonight for an important early season match with Lewis and Clark.

All 10 GSL teams play a pair of best-of-three matches Saturday at either the Kentwood or Walla Walla tournaments.
