Sanders Tosses One-Hit Shutout
Scott Sanders pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fifth-inning single to Domingo Cedeno, for his first career shutout as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Texas Rangers 4-0 Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.
Sanders (5-12), 1-6 with a 6.04 ERA in 10 previous starts with Detroit, struck out a season-high eight and walked one.
Sanders retired the first 14 batters before Cedeno singled cleanly to left-center field with two outs in the fifth. Sanders set down the next 12 hitters before walking Tom Goodwin with two outs in the ninth.

Toronto
Rookie Chris Carpenter pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout as Toronto topped Anaheim for its fifth consecutive victory.
Carpenter (2-7) allowed one runner to reach second, struck out four and walked three while facing just 28 batters. The right-hander retired the final 11 in a row for his first complete game in 10 starts.
The shutout was Toronto’s league-leading 14th this season.

Minneapolis
Jimmy Haynes struck out a season-high nine batters and Dave Magadan and Ben Grieve each had a pair of RBI singles to lead Oakland over Minnesota.
Only 9,705 tickets were sold for the game, the second-smallest Metrodome crowd this season. A season-low 9,363 tickets were purchased for Monday night’s opener of the two-game series.

Geronimo Berroa led off a six-run sixth with his 25th homer as Baltimore stopped Cleveland’s five-game winning streak in a game called after eight innings due to rain.
Roberto Alomar was 3 for 3 in his second consecutive start before leaving in the fifth. The Orioles are trying to ease their All-Star second baseman back in to the lineup after he missed more than a month with a strained groin.
Cleveland’s Matt Williams went 0 for 3 with a walk, ending his career-high hitting streak at 24 games.
White Sox 4, Brewers 1
Chicago
Scott Eyre, one of several young pitchers trying to earn a job for the new-look White Sox next season, allowed four hits in 6-1/3 innings as Chicago defeated Milwaukee.
Dave Martinez and Mike Cameron homered for Chicago, which snapped a six-game losing streak.
Eyre (3-3) walked two and struck out six in his longest stint since getting called up from Double-A Birmingham on July 31.
Yankees 8, Red Sox 6
Boston
Wade Boggs and Steve Avery reprised their World Series showdown and Boggs won again, doubling to start a five-run sixth inning as New York rallied to defeat Boston.
In Avery’s first relief appearance since Game 4 of last year’s Series, when he walked Boggs in the 10th inning to force in the winning run, the former Atlanta Braves pitcher failed to get an out.
Willie Banks (1-0) earned the victory and Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 41st save in 49 chances.

Red Sox rookie Nomar Garciaparra set the major league record for RBIs by a leadoff hitter with a two-run single in the fourth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Yankees. The hit gave Garciaparra 87 RBIs this year, topping the 85 by Detroit’s Harvey Kuenn in 1956… . Injured Yankees pitcher David Cone threw for 15 minutes off a mound and reported no pain in his sore shoulder. He will throw again Friday… . Mark Whiten will not be charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel in Milwaukee last month because prosecutors don’t have enough evidence against the former New York Yankees outfielder.
