Celebrities Playing Ball For Charity

Three former professional sports stars will be in Coeur d’Alene Sunday to play in a soft ball game benefiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Idaho.

Former New York Yankees pitcher Goose Gossage, exOakland Raiders linebacker Rod Martin and former Los Angeles Lakers guard Michael Cooper will team with the North Idaho College baseball team.

The celebrities and their NIC teammates will take on the Coeur d’Alene Police and Firefighters. The game will be played at Memorial Field at 2 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters office in Coeur d’Alene by telephoning 667-0975. Cost is $20 for a group pass for four or $10 for an individual ticket. Additional tickets are $5 apiece.

Weight-lifting event

Idaho Iron in Post Falls will host the USPF National Deadlift Championships and Great Northern Bench Press Championships Saturday at Templin’s Resort.

About 200 are entered in the deadlift competition including entrants from 12 stats and Canada.

The world’s strongest man, Anthony Clark, will attempt to break his own national record of an 800-pound bench press.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. and will conclude about 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $7.

Clark will be at Idaho Iron (2440 W. Seltice Way) Friday at 6 p.m. to sign autographs.

Golf

Bill Porter of Quincy, Wash. carded a final round 3-under-par 69 to win the Northwest Open at Bend, Ore., by one stroke.

Men’s soccer

Jeff McAllister scored four goals, within one goal of matching the school record, and Gonzaga University (4-0-0) established a single-game mark for goals in a 10-1 victory over Evergreen State (1-3-0) at Martin Field.
