Ex-Coug Released By Calgary’s Cfl Team

Former Washington State University defensive end DeWayne Patterson has been released by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

Patterson, in his third season in the CFL, last played for WSU in 1994, when he was a second-team AllAmerican.

Ex-Indians lift Lugnuts

The Lansing Lugnuts, with former Spokane Indians making up the bulk of their lineup, defeated Kane County 9-7 Thursday night at Geneva, Ill., to become surprise champions of the Midwest League.

Third in the Eastern Division’s second-half standings, Lansing reached the brink of the title Wednesday when 1997 Spokane standout Jason Gooding pitched eight innings of shutout ball in a 7-0 victory. Gooding struck out nine and Midwest League batting champion Tony Miranda, an Indians outfielder in 1995 and 1996, hit a two-run homer.

Lansing won three straight best-of-5 series for the title. Kane County was the second-half champion of the league’s Central Division.
