Former WSU Star Hits For The Cycle

John Olerud hit for the cycle and drove in five runs as the New York Mets beat the Montreal Expos 9-5 Thursday night. Olerud hit an RBI double in the first inning, a single in the third, a solo homer in the seventh and a bases-loaded triple in the eighth.

The former Washington State University star from Bellevue, Wash., is the seventh Met to hit for the cycle, and the first to do it at Shea Stadium since Tommie Agee on July 6, 1970.

Philadelphia

Jeff Kent’s two-run homer in the ninth inning gave San Francisco its win over Philadelphia, moving the Giants into a first-place tie with the idle Los Angeles Dodgers in the N.L. West.

Yankees 14, Orioles 2

Baltimore

Derek Jeter and Paul O’Neill had three RBIs apiece in a nine-run sixth inning and New York handed Baltimore its most lopsided loss of the season.

New York was 0-7 against Baltimore this season before winning at home 10-3 Sunday. For an encore, the Yankees hammered the Orioles in a game that was reminiscent of last season, when New York won 10 of 13 against Baltimore.

Jeter had a three-run double and O’Neill hit a three-run homer in the sixth, the Yankees’ biggest inning this year.

Arlington, Texas

Ivan Rodriguez homered three times and Roger Pavlik pitched six shutout innings as Texas ended a five-game losing streak by defeating Minnesota.

White Sox 7, Indians 5

Chicago

Robin Ventura’s tie-breaking, two-run single in the seventh inning allowed Chicago to defeat Cleveland.

Athletics 8, Blue Jays 7

Oakland, Calif.

Rookie Ben Grieve singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of ninth inning, giving Oakland its victory over Toronto.

Royals 4, Angels 2

Anaheim, Calif.

Roderick Myers and Dean Palmer homered as Kansas City beat Anaheim, damaging the Angels’ wild-card hopes.
