Five years ago: Stefan Edberg defeated Pete Sampras to win the U.S. Open title in New York, a day after Monica Seles beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win her seventh Grand Slam title.

One year ago: Rapper Tupac Shakur died at a Las Vegas hospital six days after he was wounded in a drive-by shooting; he was 25.
