WHAT’S HOT

The high-tech industry saw both highs and lows during this week’s trading. … On Wednesday Tinsley Laboratories’ stock soared $10.50 a share to close at $21.25 on the NASDAQ. The Richmond, Calif. maker of optics and lens systems agreed to be acquired by Silicon Valley Group, a manufacturer of semiconductor processing equipment. Tinsley’s stock closed at $ 21.38 on Friday, up from last week’s close of $10.75. … On Thursday’s NASDAQ, Belgian company Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products, maker of speech-recognition technology products, got a boost from Microsoft, when the Seattle-based computer company paid $45 million for a minority stake in the company. Lernout & Hauspie’s stock increased $7.25 a share to close at $39.13. The companies plan to develop products for Microsoft Windows programs to allow computers to recognize spoken words. Last week L&H stock closed at $31.44.

WHAT’S NOT

On Monday, San Diego-based Cymer saw its stock slide after it it disclosed that near-term results may not meet expectations. Its stock slipped $12.88 a share to close at $69.13 on the NASDAQ. On Friday, its stock closed at $30.25, down from last week’s close of $82.
