HOW THEY SCORED

First quarter

WSU 7, USC 0

Shawn McWashington 3-yard pass from Ryan Leaf, Rian Lindell kick. 56 yards in six plays, 2:18 elapsed. WSU gets great field position after a series of USC penalties backed the Trojans into a fourth-and-30 from their own 17-yard-line. WSU burns USC cornerback Daylon McCutcheon twice on the drive, including Michael Black’s 35-yard gain on a swing pass to start the drive.

McWashington’s TD also came against McCutcheon, a preseason All-America selection.

Second quarter

WSU 14, USC 0

Michael Black 16-yard run, Lindell kick. 80 yards, eight plays, 2:53. After shredding the Trojans with precision passes on the game’s first scoring drive, the Cougars attack USC on the ground this time. WSU runs six times for 40 yards on the drive. The remaining yardage comes on a 40-yard completion to Chris Jackson, who beat safety Darnell Lacy on the play. Black ran over Lacy on his way to the end zone.

WSU 14, USC 6

Malaefou MacKenzie 1-yard run, kick fails. 84 yards, 13 plays, 6:15. USC makes gains of 12, 25, and 41 to convert third-and-long situations. USC also converts a third-and-1 when WSU jumps offside. On the drive, USC quarterback John Fox completes 3 of 4 passes for 78 yards, including a 41-yarder to Billy Miller on third-and-18 from the WSU 41.

WSU 21, USC 6

Love Jefferson 6-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 54 yards, six plays, :58. WSU takes over in USC territory after Fox fumbles snap and middle linebacker Todd Nelson recovers. On the drive, Leaf completes 3 of 3 passes for 26 yards and also gains 10 yards on third-and-1 keeper. Jefferson’s TD pass comes one play after Black gains 18 yards around left end on first down.

Third quarter

WSU 21, USC 13

R. Jay Soward 95-yard kickoff return, Adam Abrahms kick. 95 yards, one play, :16. Soward takes Lindell’s kickoff at the 5 and races untouched. USC two-point conversion attempt foiled by a false-start penalty, Trojans settle for a conventional conversion.

Fourth quarter

WSU 21, USC 21

Mike Bastianelli 15-yard pass from LaVale Woods, Miller pass from Fox. 54 yards, two plays, :23. After WSU offense goes three-and-out, Fox finds Miller uncovered for 29-yard gain to the WSU 15. Bastianelli appears to land out of bounds on halfback pass from Woods.

WSU 28, USC 21

Kevin McKenzie 51-yard pass from Leaf, Lindell kick. 80 yards, four plays, 1:24. On third-and-12 from WSU’s 18-yard-line, Leaf guns to an open McKenzie for 31 yards. On the next play, Leaf audibles out of a run, then quickly finds McKenzie over the middle. McWashington springs McKenzie with a vicious block on USC’s Antuan Simmons.
