Tate, Evans Lead

Compiled From Wire Services

Mark Tate’s Close Call and Mark Evans’ Pico American Dreams won the first two qualifying heats of the unlimited hydroplane races on Mission Bay.

Driven by Mark Weber, Miss Budweiser led qualifiers with a lap of 162.599 mph. But a broken bolt in the boat’s wing pedal forced it to run third in the heat won by Tate.

The final two heats and the 31st running of the Bill Muncey Memorial Cup will be run today.
