Fairchild Tankers Join Search In Africa

Tue., Sept. 16, 1997

Two air tankers from Fairchild Air Force Base will leave this morning to assist in the search for a U.S. military cargo plane that vanished Sunday off the west coast of Africa.

The KC-135 tankers will be based at Ascension Island and will refuel a C-130 search plane and other aircraft, said Lt. Amy Hulten, Fairchild spokeswoman.

“The mission is being developed as we speak,” Hulten said Monday.

A U.S. Air Force C-141 Starlifter with nine crew members vanished on Sunday en route to Ascension Island from Namibia. It disappeared in the same area and at the same time a German military plane disappeared.

About 25 Fairchild crew members will go on the mission. Hulten did not know how long they will be gone.
