Boise State Drops Zags In Five-Game Marathon

Boise State avenged an earlier five-game home loss to Gonzaga University by stopping the Bulldogs 9-15, 15-11, 5-15, 15-11, 15-13 in a non-conference volley ball match Tuesday at the Martin Centre.

In the decisive fifth game, BSU jumped to a 9-4 lead, increased the margin to 13-7 and then held off a Bulldog rally that closed the deficit to 13-12.

Diane Pascua had a match-high 22 kills for the Bulldogs, followed by Theresa Spink with 11 and Megan Hosek with a career-high 11. Pascua also led six Gonzaga players in double-digit digs with 19.

Gonzaga falls to 5-6 overall with its second consecutive loss. The Broncos improve to 6-5 in snapping a three-match losing streak to the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga plays at Pacific on Friday.

Katy Shepard and Julie Kaulius each had 13 kills for the Broncos, Kaulius also adding a match-high .316 hitting percentage as she had just one attack error in 38 attempts. Jeni Elson contributed a match-high 23 digs for BSU, while Kaulius added 16, Brandy Mamizuka 15 and Shepard 13.

Gonzaga University senior forward Jeff McAllister has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his six goals last week. The Portland native scored four goals in the Bulldogs’ 10-1 win over The Evergreen State College, then tallied twice in Sunday’s 3-0 win over the California Irvine at the Oregon State University Tournament in Corvallis.

The Bulldogs retained the eighth spot in this week’s NSCAA/Umbro Far West Region rankings.

McAllister is the goals (9) and points leader (22) in the Far West Region, and is tied for second in assists (4).
