Asarco To Establish Monitoring Process

From Staff And Wire Reports

Asarco Inc. said Wednesday it has agreed to establish an environmental monitoring process for two of its mining facilities and Cabinet Resource Group, a Montana environmental organization, will drop its suit filed against the company under the Clean Water Act.

The suit had been filed last year in U.S. District Court in Missoula.

In addition, Asarco and Cabinet Resource Group said they will form a technical committee to review historic mining records of Asarco’s Troy, Mont., mine’s tailings impoundment, collect additional data and make recommendations for future environmental monitoring.

The committee will include two Asarco representatives, two Cabinet Resource representatives, and one other member.

New York-based Asarco formed Silver Valley Resources with Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. in 1995.
