Pirate Offense Keeps Rolling Rogers Downs North Central; Mead Trips Ferris In Overtime

When Brett Oglesbee sat in the Albi Stadium stands last year his dream was to play quarterback for the Rogers Pirates.

His dream included wins but not the high-octane offense the Pirates have displayed this season.

Rogers rolled to a 33-25 win over North Central Thursday night, giving the Pirates 67 points in two games, just two seasons removed from a season when they had 40 points in nine games.

“I knew we had a good offense,” the junior quarterback said, “but I didn’t think about that. We did good in 7-on-7, scored a lot of points. But when I watched from the stands last year, I didn’t think it would be like that.”

Oglesbee threw for two touchdowns, giving him five for the season, and ran for another, his third.

In the second game of the doubleheader, played before 4,362, Mead edged Ferris in overtime 27-21.

Oglesbee has dedicated his season to his grandfather, Everett, who is too ill to attend the games. Thinking about his grandfather improves, rather than impairs, his concentration, he said.

Having Mike Dorton in the backfield helps, too. Dorton didn’t play in the first quarter because he missed some practice after having wisdom teeth removed this week.

North Central led 7-0 after one quarter before Dorton entered, and he clipped off 14 yards on his first carry. That started a game-tying drive, capped by Oglesbee’s 2-yard run. Brian Mack ripped off a 46-yard run for NC that led to a 13-7 lead, but Dorton quickly took care of that. Dorton caught the ensuing kickoff on the 12, went straight up the field and bounced off about a half-dozen potential tacklers before spinning to the right sideline and racing to the end zone. Jason Gregorson’s PAT put the Pirates up for good.

Oglesbee hit sophomore Danny Crowley with a 28-yard TD pass just before the half for a 21-13 lead. The combo connected on a 2-yarder early in the third quarter to make it 27-13.

Oglesbee finished 7 of 16 for 91 yards and two interceptions. Dorton rushed for 149 yards on 26 carries and scored the final touchdown.

“We have good athletes,” Rogers offensive coordinator Dave Hughes said. “We have better skill than in past years, and they’re making the plays. We’re calling the same plays as always and they’re executing them.”

Mead 27, Ferris 21 (OT)

Brandon Muzatko hit Chris Callahan for a 21-yard touchdown in overtime to give Mead its victory.

The Panthers broke on top early, but in keeping with the spirit of close games this season they tossed in five turnovers to help the Saxons battle back.

After stopping the Saxons in OT, Mead faced a third-and-6 from the 21. Muzatko hit Callahan, the slot receiver, on a slant and he split the seam to score easily.

“We almost killed it for ourselves,” Muzatko said, “but we stuck with it. We actually ran (the winning play) a few times. Sometimes the linebackers dropped and it was hard to find the hole. The main thing is we played hard and got the win.”

Ferris battled back from an early 14-0 deficit with 13 points in the third quarter. Mead botched a punt and Zach Reiter recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Later, Nick Bozo broke off an 87-yard run.

The Panthers quickly regained the lead, but Andre Atkins found Tommy Service for a 55-yard touchdown and the duo hooked up for the 2-point PAT to tie the game at 21 with 10:22 to play.

Minutes later, another bad punt set Ferris up at the 37, but a 48-yard field goal by Bozo just missed.
