Drumming, Dancing Highlight Nic Powwow

From Staff And Wire Reports

North Idaho College is hosting a drumming and dancing competition next week as part of its first annual Native American powwow.

Food booths, tepees and native craft vendors are expected to be on hand after 1 p.m. Friday on the NIC soccer field.

The college’s “celebration of heritage and diversity” is the first public event co-sponsored with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe since the August signing of a nine-point new Native American program agreement.

“Those who dance, dance out of respect for their ancestors,” said Monte Twin, NIC’s diversity adviser. “It is a spiritual thing. The drum represents the heartbeat of the people.”

Twin visited tribes throughout the region to invite them to the event, which will also include a traditional Native American stick game.

The powwow will be moved to NIC’s gymnasium if weather is threatening.
