Art ‘Samples’ Sought For Juried Show

Inland Northwest artists, 18 and older, are invited to enter the 1998 Spokane Sampler, a juried, all-media competition organized by the Cheney Cowles Museum.

Sheryl Conkleton, senior curator at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, will jury the exhibition, which will run Jan. 16 to Feb. 15 in the museum.

Entry fee is $7 per object, with a maximum of three pieces per artist. Slides of artists’ work is due by Nov. 8. For an entry form, call the museum at 456-3931 ext. 101 or 125.

In conjunction with the event, Spokane Art School will offer the workshop “Photographing Your Artwork” Oct. 4. Cost is $40. For more information, or to register for the workshop, call the school at 328-0900.

‘Nutcracker’ auditions open

The Alberta Ballet Company will hold auditions for its production of “The Nutcracker” Sunday, Sept. 28, in Building 15 on the Spokane Falls Community College campus. There is an audition fee of $10.

Audition requirements are:

Children, 10 and older, between 4 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a minimum of six years ballet training, will audition at 1 p.m.

Children, 10 to 12 years old, between 4 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 2 inches, with four years training will audition at 4 p.m.

Children, 10 to 15 years old, 4 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 6 inches, with at least three years training will audition at 5 p.m.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed Dec. 4, 7 p.m. at the Spokane Opera House.

Letters with a flourish

The Spokane Art School will offer a workshop for calligraphers from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, taught by artist and instructor Claryn Reid.

“Watercolor for Calligraphy” will teach experienced calligraphers how to add greater dimension and expression to their work.
