Sneak Preview Of $75 Million Spokane Convention Center

Years of debate about expanding the Spokane Convention Center culminate on Monday when a key city committee unveils its idea for beefing up Spokane’s convention industry.

The plan: an enlarged center that covers an entire city block south of Spokane Falls Boulevard, across from the Opera House and Convention Center.

The cost: about $75 million.

The recommendation is based on $185,000 study commissioned by the city in February.

How such a project would be paid for isn’t clear.

But supporters say it would help the city attract a much larger slice of the lucrative regional and national meeting and exhibition business.

The Spokane City Council is scheduled to review the plans Monday night. For an early look, turn to today’s Business section on page A20.
