Stanford Survives Beaver Attack

Associated Press

Pac-10

Greg Comella bulled over from 2 yards out for a touchdown with 27 seconds to play to give No. 21 Stanford a 27-24 victory over upstart Oregon State Saturday in their Pac-10 opener at Corvallis, Ore.

Trailing 24-20, the Cardinal (2-1) drove 78 yards in 15 plays for the game-winning touchdown.

Oregon State, 1-1 under new coach Mike Riley, had stunned Stanford with DeShawn Williams’ 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to cut the Cardinal’s lead to 20-18.

The Beavers, looking to upset Stanford in Corvallis for the second year in a row, moved ahead on field goals of 45 and 33 yards by juniorcollege transfer Jose Cortez in the second half.

Stanford’s Chad Hutchinson, sacked 11 times by the Beavers in last year’s 26-12 upset, was sacked seven times Saturday. But he regrouped to complete 4 of 4 passes on the winning drive.

The Beavers’ defense held tough, but on fourth-and-2 from the 5-yard line, Mike Mitchell struggled up the middle for a first down at the 2. Two plays later, Comella scored his second touchdown of the game.
