Compiled From Wire Services

After two hours and a third-set tiebreaker, Monica Seles finally managed to surprise Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

A drop shot on her fourth match point gave the top seed a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) triumph Sunday and her fourth championship in the Toyota Princess Cup, including the last two against Sanchez Vicario. Seles also won in 1991 and 1992. It was Seles’ seventh singles final this year and her third win, boosting her career total to 41.

Seles got a crucial break back in the final set’s sixth game after six deuces and four game points for Sanchez Vicario.

In the tiebreaker, Seles took a 4-0 lead on three powerful winners and a miss by the Spaniard. She reached 5-2 when an oncoming shot popped up off the net cord, giving her an easy putaway. At 6-3, Sanchez Vicario saved two more match points on an error by Seles and a backhand volley after forcing a short return, but then came the winning drop shot.
