Ccs Spoils Soccer Debut For Eastern Women, 3-0

Renee Volland, Holly Vanwert and Heidi Simmons scored as Community College of Spokane spoiled Eastern Washington’s women’s soccer debut by defeating the Eagles 3-0 Monday in Cheney.

Eastern, held to just five shots on goal, was playing in the school’s first-ever women’s soccer match. Eastern is playing a mostly non-Division I schedule this fall before soccer becomes a Big Sky Conference sport next fall.

Volland’s score at 43:30 in the first half came after teammate Katie Snow’s attempt went off Eastern keeper Amy Schmitt. Vanwert’s scored at 73 minutes on an assist from Danae Anderson, and Simmons’ goal came 1-1/2 minutes later on a pass from Snow.

Despite giving up three goals, Schmidt had eight saves for the Eagles. Spokane keeper Angie Vulcano needed just two saves to earn the shutout.

CCS was able to contain EWU’s two quick forwards, Caryn Woel and Katie Bowers.
