Local Students Honored For Academics, Leadership

Seven Spokane-area students were among 20 Eastern Washington University graduates this spring to receive the Mary Shields Wilson Award for outstanding achievement in academics or leadership in service to the university or the community.

The graduates, their degrees and their parents are:

Barrett Swigard, B.S. in human biology and chemistry; he is the son of Marie Swigard, Spokane, and Kent Swigard, Seattle.

Laura Toussaint, B.A. in sociology and clinical psychology; she is the daughter of Barbara and Tom Toussaint, Spokane.

James DuPlain, B.S. in chemistry; he is the son of Lisa DuPlain and Harvey Phillips of Spokane.

Jennifer Childress, B.S. in reading and education; she is the daughter of Joy and Bob Yake, Spokane.

Beverly H. Rose, B.A. in liberal studies and communications; she is the daughter of Alta and Donald Hyde of Spokane.

Daniel Cravens, B.S. in earth science and mathematics, and education; he is a staff sergeant in the Air Guard at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Jillene Beach, B.S. in nursing from the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education; she is the daughter of Joyce and Gary Beach, Spokane.

Five Boy Scouts from Troop 481, sponsored by Peace Lutheran Church in Otis Orchards, received their Eagle Scout Awards, the highest rank given by the Scouts.

The boys and their parents are:

Tyrel F. Newbill, son of Denise Carruthers and Gary Newbill, both of Otis Orchards; Nicolas R. “Nick” Knapton, son of Kathy Olson, Liberty Lake, and Terry Knapton, Republic, Wash.; Paul S. Schultz, son of Steve and Julie Schultz, Greenacres; and Mark E. Willcox and Michael A. “Tony” Willcox, twin sons of Ray and Kathy Wilcox, Otis Orchards.

Newbill’s Eagle project was to build and install signs and trail maps at Liberty Lake State Park.

Knapton conducted a book drive for Christ Lutheran Church.

Schultz built a teeter-totter at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Otis Orchards.

The Willcox brothers installed a climbing toy at St. Mary’s School.

Five Spokane students graduated from the University of Oregon in Eugene. The students and their bachelor degrees are:

Krista Garcia, English; David Garaghty, fine and applied arts; Kevin T. Kerwien, political science; Erika Olmsted, journalism; and Cathleen H. Rafferty, biology.
