Rusedski slammed 20 aces against the Australian in a victory that guarantees him at least $250,000.

“I thought, my God, it’s $250,000 if I win this last service game - so you better try hard,” said Rusedski.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia beat Spain’s Sergi Bruguera 6-4, 6-3, France’s Cedric Pioline won when Belgium’s Filip DeWulf withdrew in the second set because of a twisted ankle and Chile’s Marcelo Rios struggled before ousting Australia’s Mark Woodforde 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-1.

Katrina Nimmers, a longtime friend of Venus Williams who developed her game in South Central Los Angeles, was beaten by veteran Elizabeth Cameron 7-5, 6-2 in her professional debut at San Jose, Calif.
