Ferris Sweeps Shadle

GSL volleyball

In convincing fashion Tuesday, Ferris stalled Shadle Park’s rise toward the top of the Greater Spokane League.

Missy Blackshire’s 16 kills and seven digs led the Saxons (7-1) to a 15-1, 15-4, 15-12 win at Shadle (5-2).

Shadle led the third game 6-3. The teams tied at 12 before the Saxons ended the match.

Janelle Morrisette added 32 assists for Ferris, which was No. 1-ranked in the state coaches poll released over the weekend. The poll was figured before Ferris’ four-game loss at Mead last Friday.

Michelle Etter had 11 kills and six blocks, and McKenzie Kiritz 17 assists and two aces for the Highlanders.

Also in the GSL, setter Mindy Wallis finished with eight kills and 20 assists to guide league-leading Mead (7-0) to a 15-13, 12-15, 15-11, 15-8 win at Gonzaga Prep (3-4).

Abby Hornstein added four digs and three aces for Mead, fifth-ranked in the state coaches poll. For Prep, Rose Sacco had 40 assists and five aces, and Maggie Bruya added 14 kills and five aces.

Jennifer Madsen had 13 kills and served five consecutive first-game points during University’s 15-6, 15-8, 15-5 win over Mt. Spokane.

Crissa Poole added 28 assists, and she and Madsen had three aces apiece for the Titans (2-5), who have won two straight for coach Mike Welch after he started his league career 0-21.

Mt. Spokane (0-8) trailed the second game 10-2 and 14-4 before reeling off four straight points.

At Rogers, Gretchen Haight had 12 kills - four during an important first-game stretch and two in the late going - to help Lewis and Clark (5-2) to a 15-11, 15-4, 15-9 win over the Pirates (3-4).

Rogers led the opener 10-4, but unforced errors and Haight’s kills brought a turnaround. Erin Naipo had two kills when LC ran off seven consecutive points for a 10-3 second-game edge. LC scored the final five points of the third game, with Carlin Oeljen’s ace and block helping out.

Jennifer Christensen had 10 digs and Taneisha Tilque eight blocks for Rogers.

At North Central, Rikki Jackson’s 16 kills and five digs helped Central Valley (3-4) to a 15-9, 15-9, 10-15, 3-15, 15-13 win.

NC (1-6) rallied when the Bears used a substitute lineup.

CV’s Martha Roberts added 30 assists. Alice Stearns’ nine digs, three blocks and three aces helped the Indians rally. Angie Domrese of NC added 14 kills.

The season continues Thursday with NC at LC, Ferris at U-Hi and Mead at Mt. Spokane.

The following night, Rogers is at CV and Shadle travels to G-Prep. Eight of the league teams also compete Saturday.
