Vassar To Fight At Casino

Spokane’s Frank Vassar co-headlines tonight’s pro boxing card at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino in Worley.

The fights begin at 7:30. Doors open at 5:30.

Boxing legend Archie Moore will be a special guest. Moore will be accompanied by his daughter, J’Marie, who also boxes. Moore said it’s possible his daughter could box in Worley in the future.

“She’s all right. I’m trying to teach her all the tricks I knew,” said Moore, now in his 80s. “I brought her up here to let her look around a bit and see.”

Moore said he still puts on the gloves at the gym at his home in San Diego.

Vassar, an undefeated light heavyweight, faces Richard Green. The other co-main event features light heavyweights Ed Dalton and David Robinson. In another light-heavyweight match, Derek Harmon meets Malcolm Brooks.

Spokane’s Para Draine (5-0) tangles with Sue Chase in a women’s bantam-weight bout.

Spokane cruiserweight Rick Welliver, who has only lost one pro fight, faces Stacy Goodson.

Volleyball

Gonzaga University finished its non-conference volleyball schedule with a 15-10, 15-10, 17-15 victory over Montana in Missoula Tuesday night.

Gonzaga does not play again until Oct. 3, when it opens West Coast Conference competition with a match at San Diego.

In Tuesday’s third game Gonzaga was down 9-4 and rallied to trail 15-14. Then Diana Pascua came up with some big kills with the game ending on a block by Nicole Lamoure and Sharee Coad.

Pascua led Gonzaga with 19 kills while Lamoure had 44 assists. Aimee Wilson had 27 digs and Theresa Spink five blocks for Gonzaga (6-8). Montana fell to 2-10.

Soccer

Gonzaga University freshman Sara Streufert has been named the West Coast Conference women’s soccer Player of the Week for her role in the Bulldogs back-to-back victories and inaugural WCC win last week.

Streufert scored the first two goals Sunday and assisted on the game-winner as Gonzaga rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down Saint Mary’s College 5-2 for Gonzaga’s first WCC win in its 5-year conference membership. Gonzaga was 0-26-1 in WCC play heading into the contest.

Gonzaga University senior forward Jeff McAllister leads the nation in men’s soccer scoring statistics released this week. His 11 goals and five assists for 27 points gives him a two-point edge over John Wolyniec of Fordham University.

The Bulldogs (6-2-0), who last week downed Cal State Fullerton 4-0 and fell 2-1 to Loyola Marymount University in their West Coast Conference opener, moved up a notch to seventh in this week’s NSCAA/Umbro Far West Region rankings.

Motor racing

Stateline Speedway will re-run the championship race for its Wednesday Night Fever Series tonight. Featured classes will be the Fever Fours, Super Four Modifieds and the Bump-to-Pass cars.

Last Wednesday’s program was cancelled by rain, one of 10 dates the track has lost to the weather this season.
