Children’s Chorus Performs ‘A Little Music’

Nina Culver Correspondent

The Spokane Area Children’s Chorus will open its 10th season Sunday with a concert called “A Little Music for a Sunday Afternoon” at Westminster Congregational Church, 411 S. Washington.

The 3 p.m. concert will feature choral selections from the Junior and Concert choirs, along with special instrumental performances from selected choir members.

The children perform a wide variety of music, says executive director Bill Mays, and there’s a lot of contemporary music available that’s written just for kids. “We do some musical comedy,” says Mays. “We do music by some of the traditional composers. We will drag out some of the old favorites and do them from time to time, but we’re always looking for new stuff.”

The chorus began in 1987 with 30 youngsters. Now the chorus boasts a membership of 180 children between the ages of 7 and 17, who form four performing groups. The Ensemble, the advanced group of performers, toured Austria and Hungary last year and is planning a concert tour in England, Scotland and Wales in 1998.

The Children’s Chorus has performed with the Spokane Symphony, Uptown Opera and the Spokane String Quartet. Upcoming performances include a concert with The American Boy Choir of Princeton, N.J., Oct. 24-25, the 10th anniversary fall concert on Oct. 18-19, and “The Glory of Vivaldi” with the Spokane Youth Symphony on Dec. 7.
