Fun Fest 8th Annual Valleyfest A Romp In The Park

Story And Photos By Sandra Bancr

“This is the best day of my life!” Tiffany Johnson declared from the sidewalk in front of her home. Who could argue with the six-year-old, who on Saturday was running around in her baby-blue feety pajamas, high on sugar and the excitement of a parade treading past her front door. And the candy just kept coming, spilling out of cars, wagons, and the hands of countless smiling people.

The 8th annual Valleyfest made the Terrace View Park area the place for kids to have a good day. There was a fun run, pancake breakfast, and parade for starters. There were booths for making giant bubbles and cereal necklaces and for learning about fire safety. There were snakes and ferrets to pet, and entertainment by the cast of The Wizard of Oz and by the Spokane Symphony.

Adults had fun acting like kids, too. Terry Mourning of the Percussion-Naut Patriots and Clyde Carpenter of Angus Scott Pipe Band traded instruments after the parade. Carpenter struggled through a ditty on a borrowed Patriot’s fife after coaching Mourning on his bagpipes. Mourning, looking like the wolf at the the door of a smart pig’s home, huffed and puffed and finally produced a sound akin to a dying pig.

“So, you going to switch?” Carpenter asked.

“No,” was Mourning’s breathless reply. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: 5 color photos
